I hate the word “diet” especially in relation to GAPS. You see, GAPS is not a diet per say. It is healing through nutrition. GAPS is an acronym for “Gut and Psychology Syndrome”.
The GAPS diet is best described as follows: “GAPS is based on the premise that a healthy balance of gut bacteria serves to protect and nourish the body. When the bacterial field becomes imbalanced, one of our first lines of defense becomes ineffective. Without protection, the gut wall is open to anything that comes along: fungi, viruses, environmental toxins, parasites, etc. Also, because food depends on bacteria for its processing, when the balance is off nutrients cannot effectively be accessed, never mind distributed throughout the body”.
This is explained in depth in the Gut and Psychology Syndrome book written by Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride. (affiliate link) It should be required reading for everyone.
At its core, GAPS is essentially a natural treatment (through diet… plus detox and supplements) for a multitude of health concerns, such as:
- Behavioral problems
- Celiac Disease
- Chronic illness (colds and viruses)
- Crohn’s Disease
- Cystic Fibrosis
- Diarrhea (chronic)
- Feeding difficulties including “picky eating”
- Food Sensitivities
- Learning disabilities
- Night Wakings
- Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
- Rheumatoid Arthritis
- Stool Abnormalities
- And a myriad of other health problems
Due to some yet undiagnosed issues I am having with my gut, I embarked upon the GAPS Intro diet 2 weeks ago. The GAPS Intro is hardcore. Seriously…there is a lot a prep work involved and a huge commitment to changing your relationship with food. Luckily, as a real foodie, I already had a lot of the basics in place so really, the prep work for me was fairly light.
