Smarts Sweets Ebook Giveaway {Worldwide – 02/11}

Yesterday I introduced you to the world of “natural” sweeteners in my post A Hard Look at the Benefits and Concerns of Natural Sweeteners. And yes, I’ll admit it! I have a sweet teeth. Cupcakes drive me wild. Cake…mmmm. And Fudge! Oh my goodness fudge!

But as well all know, sugar (natural included) and sweet treats are not something to be consumed in abundance. Heartbreaking really. I mean, why can’t life taste a little sweet?

Well – it can! You just have to be creative about it! Enter Katie from Kitchen Stewardship. She created a fabulous Ebook filled to the brim with some VERY tasty recipes all geared towards satisfying even then most discerning sweet tooth.


Katie states that the goal of Smart Sweets: 30 Desserts to Indulge Your Sweet Tooth is to give you options that are way better for you than you’ll find in the grocery store, usually better for you than another homemade version, and sometimes downright good for you. You’ll find less sugar, healthier sweeteners, whole grains, soaked and sprouted grains, no grains, probiotics and even some vegetables in these desserts recipes.

Yep – it’s true! There are probiotics and hidden veggies in several of Katie’s delicious creations.

Smart Sweets has a wonderful introduction section where you can take a few moments to learn about the difference between snacks and sweets; three tips to trick your tongue; and what supplies are a good idea to have around amongst a host of other great information.

The recipe section is intense. Seriously! I had a tough time deciding what to make first. There were cookies, bars and brownies, cakes and cupcakes, pies, candy, frozen desserts, and more! My mind was spinning!

For the purposes of this giveaway, I tackled one dessert I figured you all would love and then another dessert that I was notorious for making when I was in high school. So let’s start with that one.

If anyone I went to high school with is reading this, they should remember those amazing friend tortillas I brought to our Spanish class potluck. Buñuelos become my trademark in high school. These cinnamon-sugary fried tortillas were easy to make and oh so yummy!

Katie’s recipe was identical to how I made them so I thought I would mix it up and use her suggestion of substituting honey for the sugar. I also used her homemade tortilla recipe substituting gluten free flour for the flour called for. Yeah – these puppies turned out delicious! Better than I remember and even more addicting. Again so simple to make! They were very crunchy, not overly sweet with just enough cinnamon to add a little layer of complexity to a pretty simply dessert. I can’t have dairy but I think vanilla bean ice cream would be divine on top of these.

The second recipe I tackled (not like anyone needed to twist my arm) was Katie’s Magic Coconut Pie. You all know I love me some coconut and pie – well pie and I are good friends. So this was fitting. After I read the recipe and realized how SUPER easy it was, there was no way I could NOT make tis and share it with all of you! Now, you will have to purchase a copy of the book to get the full recipe but I will tell you that there are only 7 ingredients involved AND the crust makes itself! Yes, you read that right. You do not need to make a crust which means fewer dishes. The other amazing part of this recipe is that there are so many variations to accommodate all kinds of food allergies and preferences. Plus, you really cannot mess this recipe it. I mean, you throw everything into a blender, let the blender do the heavy lifting, then bake it in a pie pan. Seriously. Easiest recipe ever. And mouth-watering! MOUTH. WATERING. I wouldn’t lie about coconut pie!

Katie’s book is well crafted, the recipes are all very easy to follow, and the results were nothing short of amazing. Smart Sweets has a permanent place in my repertoire of cookbooks!

  1. I will probably try the Better-For-You Chocolate Syrup first, because my children AND husband are crazy about chocolate milk, and I’ve been looking for acceptable (a must by dh), alternative recipes than the HFCS heavy Hershey’s!
