Supply and demand is a beautiful thing. You demand more coconut oil and I supply it! Ok, maybe I don’t personally supply it but I have the different task of vetting the best coconut oil out there! Sometimes I find the coconut oil and sometimes it finds me.
Coconutreat contacted me and asked if I would be interested in sampling their product. I checked out their website and immediately got distracted (in a good way) by their catchy logo. I thought it was pretty clever to use a coconut palm tree as the “t.”
After I stopped coveting their logo, I got down to the business of making sure that this company conformed to the same standards of the other coconut oil companies I have reviewed. Although their website is fairly basic, there is a lot of really good information packed onto it. I liked what I read so I agreed to give their coconut oil a fair review.
Coconutreat has been providing the highest quality Organic Coconut Oil since 2004. All of their oil is Certified USDA Organic, Raw, Cold Pressed, Extra Virgin Coconut Oil.
Coconutreat was founded by Dr. Ross Lloyd to provide Organic Coconut Oil to his patients. As a Holistic Chiropractor and Whole Food Nutritionist he understands the value of the amazing health benefits of Coconut Oil. Dr. Lloyd moved his family of 7 to Southern Idaho in 2009 to live a more independent and self-sustaining lifestyle. He currently raises grass fed beef, rabbits, chickens, and milk goats and enjoys taking care of his mini farm with his family. I envy Dr. Lloyd. I would love to be able to raise most of what I eat myself. The fact that he made this happen for his family impressed me.
Coconutreat carries coconut oil by the gallon, half gallon, and quart. They even offer a 4 ounce coconut oil skin cream. So let’s get down to business…
Coconutreat sent me both a quart of coconut oil and a 4 ounce jar of skin cream to try out. When they arrived, I had to wrestle them away from Tiny per the usual. That girl just KNOWS when a box has coconut oil in it. She can smell it coming down the street. I kid you not. It makes me a proud mama.
We immediately had to try out the coconut oil skin crème. This skin crème is just coconut oil, nothing else added. It is in a convenient 4 ounce jar which makes it handy to keep in the bathroom to use on chapped lips, wind burned/sunburned cheeks, and to attack those occasional blemishes. I would love to say that this is where our jar now lives but actually it has become Tiny’s personal coconut oil jar and she dives into regularly. I have refilled it several times already. So basically, thanks for the great 3-year-old sized jar of coconut oil Coconutreat!
I did my standard tests on the Coconutreat Coconut Oil. I first ate it off the spoon. Good stuff and interestingly enough it had a lighter texture than I am used to. I did notice more air bubbles in this oil which may account for the texture difference. It tasted great – nothing different or concerning there. And I did really like the lighter texture. It slid down a little easier that way. I have no idea what makes this oil lighter as it is produced in the same manner as the other coconut oil I have reviewed but I’m not complaining. Eating coconut oil day after day after day can get a little tedious. This was a nice change.
I of course had to cook and bake with the oil to make sure it could hold its own. I scrambled my eggs in it, sautéed my cabbage in it, and baked coconut bread with it. Everything turned out delicious and much to my surprise, had very little coconut oil flavor. Most unrefined coconut oils impart a distinct coconutty flavor. The Coconutreat oil was much milder which I quite liked. This makes is a bit more versatile as I do not always want all of my food tasting like coconut. Coconut flavored spinach isn’t exactly something I would beg for more of but when I used this oil to sauté my spinach, it was delicious. The very subtle coconut flavor did not overpower or really even alter the great taste of my organic spinach!
The one downside was that although the containers are very eye catching, they are plastic but this is not uncommon. On their website, Coconutreat actually addressed they they do not use glass containers for their Coconut Oil. “So as not to increase the cost of your Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, our packaging is in high quality USDA approved PETE plastic canisters. This is the same plastic used in water and soda bottles. The PETE canisters are guaranteed to not leach toxic materials into the oil. They are also safer than glass because they do not break and can be reused over and over again as canisters for other foods or more Coconut Oil! We know of no other company that supplies Coconut Oil in these wonderful easy to hold, wide mouth canisters. You’ll love them. We guarantee it!” So that made me feel better about the plastic.
