In October, I laid it all out for you. The good, the bad, the ugly, and how I was determined to heal my body and get this ulcerative colitis under control naturally!
The journey this past month has not been easy but the road that led to this place is not a path I wish to continue on.
There is some really good news to report. Really good news. I am noticing improvement in my colitis. After 19 ½ months I am finally making strides in healing this monster raging inside my colon!
Be forward…I am about to talk about poop. My poop. But nothing too graphic.
If you will recall, I had been struggling with living a normal life due to the need to remain 2 steps away from a toilet at all times. There seemed to be no rhyme or reason to when the urge to go would hit but when it did, I better already be in route to the commode. The stuff coming out of me was the stuff of nightmares. I mean really…some days I was quite sure I was dying.
One month after beginning my healing journey I am pleased to report that I am no longer eliminating toilet bowl after toilet bowl of blood. (Sorry – but I am trying to illustrate just how impressive my journey is!) In fact, other than a few minor random occurrences, I have not had any blood present in three weeks. THREE WEEKS! This is huge. After 19 ½ months of Freddy Kruger living my colon, I am SEEING the fruits of my hard work.
There are two dynamics at play here. First, I completely sterilized my home and my car – eliminating every last trace of gluten. It took me all month, going through each drawer and cabinet with a vinegar soaked cotton swab, but I can say with certainty that there is not a trace of gluten anywhere in my home. Thank goodness for the Gluten and Dairy-Free Traditional Foods eCourse from KerryAnn Foster of Cooking Traditional Foods (CTF). I honestly could not have done the whole-life gluten purge without her tutorials.
Rasta Daddy has been a sport (despite some initial grumblings) and he eats his gluten containing foods outside of our home. He does still store some single serving items in a special “gluten allowed” cabinet but he does not consume them in our home. I cannot risk having one single crumb of gluten hitching a ride into my body.
Not having the option to grab a bite on the go has been tough a few times but it is more of a mind over matter thing. We didn’t eat out much (as it was not in the budget) but I did enjoy the occasional sushi dinner or a salad from Trader Joes. Giving that up is certainly worth it for better health!
The second dynamic at play (and the one that I believe I am seeing results from) is the supplements that I am taking under the care of my nutritional therapist Lydia. I am taking A LOT of pills each day. A lot. Like, a ton. But this is all part of some very intensive therapy designed to reset my system. I won’t be popping upwards of 30 pills per day forever.
I think the most “interesting” supplement that I am taking is the one designed to improve my stomach acid content. It is a high potency hydrocholoric acid with pepsin to support digestive function. I know that it is working. I was actually out of it for 2 days and I noticed a HUGE difference in how I was digesting my food. I had no idea how low I was in stomach acid but slowly, this is improving.
The big gun probiotic that I am taking continues to work wonders. I continue to take a heavy duty therapeutic dose and am actually afraid to see what might happen when the time comes to back the dose off a bit. I am loving the improvement it has made in my health!
I am also taking a therapeutic dose of an arabinogalactan or Larch Arabino-Galactans derived from the Western Larch Tree. It helps to increase colon butyrate which is the primary food of the colon cells – it’s primary use is for bacterial and viral problems, immune dysfunction, colon problems and more. It also increases natural killer cells and is excellent for chronic immune dysfunction. I have to say, I think that this supplement is responsible for a lot of my success as well!
I think November will bring about a lot more positive changes as I will have had the opportunity to live in a gluten free environment without any cross contamination issues. I will continue to update you monthly with my progress. Baby steps so far, but good ones!
